Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park Day Trip

Manatees from an underwater window, native wildlife and a slow boat ride.

Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park is one of the best day trips from Quail Roost RV Park. It's just south of Crystal River, and it's a great place to see manatees and native Florida wildlife up close. It's easy for all ages, and most of it is on flat, paved paths.

What makes this park special

The park is built around a first-magnitude spring at the head of the Homosassa River. The water stays around 72 degrees all year, and the springs are so clear you can see straight to the bottom. The park cares for animals that can't return to the wild, so you'll see Florida wildlife you'd rarely spot on your own.

Top things to see

The underwater observatory

Walk down into the floating observatory, often called the Fish Bowl, and look out through the windows into the spring. You might see manatees, along with schools of fish swimming past.

Manatee programs

The park hosts manatee programs where staff share how manatees live and how to protect them. Check the park schedule for program times on the day you visit.

Florida wildlife

Follow the wildlife walk to see animals like black bears, Florida panthers, red wolves, alligators, otters, wading birds and birds of prey. Signs along the way explain each animal's story.

The boat ride

Some visitors start with a pontoon boat ride from the visitor center down Pepper Creek to the main park. It's a slow, shady ride and a nice way to begin the day.

Tips for your visit

  • Check hours and fees on the Florida State Parks website before you go.
  • Go in the morning when animals are more active and it's cooler.
  • Wear comfortable shoes. You'll walk about a mile or more.
  • Bring water and sunscreen, especially in warm months.
  • Visit in winter for the best chance of seeing wild manatees in the river too.

Make it a Nature Coast day

After your visit, grab lunch in Homosassa, then head back toward Crystal River. Stop at the Three Sisters Springs boardwalk if you still have energy, or see our full list of things to do in Crystal River.
