Three Sisters Springs: A Visitor's Guide
When to go, how to get there and how to see manatees the right way.
Three Sisters Springs is one of the most beautiful places in Florida. The water is so clear it looks like glass, and in winter it fills with manatees. It's right in Crystal River, a short drive from Quail Roost RV Park, and it's a must-see for anyone staying on the Nature Coast.
What is Three Sisters Springs?
Three Sisters Springs is a group of springs at the edge of Kings Bay in Crystal River. The springs are part of the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge. The water stays around 72 degrees all year. When the Gulf turns cold, manatees move into the springs to stay warm. On cold winter mornings, you can see dozens at once.
When is the best time to see manatees?
Manatee season runs from about mid-November through March. The best viewing is on cold, clear mornings, when the most manatees gather in the warm water. On warm days, many head back out into the bay to feed, so you may see fewer.
Two ways to visit
From the boardwalk
Land visitors can walk the boardwalk that circles the springs. It gives you a great view down into the clear water, and it's the best way to see manatees in winter without getting wet. Check the refuge or City of Crystal River website for current hours, parking, shuttle and ticket details before you go.
From the water
You can paddle or swim into the springs from Kings Bay at certain times of year. During manatee season, the springs are closed to in-water activity to protect resting manatees. Outside that season, kayakers and swimmers can visit. Always check the current rules from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service before you plan an in-water visit.
How to view manatees the right way
- Look, don't touch. Never chase, feed or touch a manatee.
- Give them space. Let manatees come and go on their own.
- Stay quiet. Calm visitors see more.
- Respect closed areas. Roped-off zones are where manatees rest.
If you want to get in the water with manatees, book a licensed guide in Crystal River. They know the rules and will show you how to do it safely.
Tips for your visit
- Go early on a cold morning for the most manatees.
- Wear polarized sunglasses to see through the glare.
- Bring binoculars and a camera.
- Dress in layers. Winter mornings can be cool.
